“Mobile First” presents an idea which a priori seems very simple: design / implement mobile web interface first (before the desktop one). In the first part of the book (in my opinion, too long), the author exposes the arguments (with some examples) to defend this idea. The main approach is to embrace the mobile constraints and turn them into new capabilities and strengths (like simple design, focus on what really matters most for the users, etc.). The next part of the book deals with most common actions and “technical tricks” to improve the mobile experience (use specific HTML5 tags, size of buttons, position of the elements…). The last part covers the more advaced aspects, especially about the layout of the website (responsive design, ppi of the images, viewports and more). In Luke Wroblewski’s words:
Here’s the elevator pitch: designing for mobile first not only prepares you for the explosive growth and new opportunities on the mobile internet, it forces you to focus and enables you to innovate in ways you previously couldn’t. Of course there’s a lot of detail behind that statement, which is what this part is all about.
